Duplicates
What Are Duplicates?
Section titled “What Are Duplicates?”We’ve all been there - you took six shots of the same sunset trying to get the perfect one. Or maybe your phone saved a burst of nearly identical frames. The result is a library full of similar-looking photos taking up storage and making it harder to find the version you actually want.
Orbyte’s Duplicates tab finds these visually similar photos and groups them together so you can compare them, pick the best one, and clean up the rest in just a few taps.
How It Works
Section titled “How It Works”As your media is processed, Orbyte analyzes the visual content of each photo - composition, colors, and structure - to identify images that are essentially the same shot. When it finds a match, it groups those photos together into what Orbyte calls a “constellation.”
Each constellation has one photo designated as the representative - the version Orbyte thinks is the sharpest and best-exposed. The rest are flagged as duplicates. You’ll see all your constellations on the Duplicates page, along with a summary of how many groups were found, the total number of duplicate assets, and how much storage you could recover by cleaning up.
Reviewing a Constellation
Section titled “Reviewing a Constellation”Tap any constellation card to see all the photos in that group side by side. Each photo shows its type, file size, and when it was taken, so you can make an informed choice about which one to keep. The current representative is clearly marked.
If Orbyte picked the wrong favorite, no problem - you can change the representative to any photo in the group. The one you choose stays in your library as the keeper, and the others remain flagged as duplicates ready for cleanup.
Cleaning Up
Section titled “Cleaning Up”When you’re ready to reclaim some storage, the cleanup process is straightforward. You can select individual constellations or use “Select All” to grab everything at once, then hit “Clean Up.” Orbyte will remove the duplicate versions from each selected group, keeping only the representative photo. Your storage usage updates immediately.
A confirmation dialog shows you exactly what will happen before anything is deleted, so there are no surprises.
Storage Recovery
Section titled “Storage Recovery”The Duplicates page shows you exactly how much storage is tied up in duplicate photos. This number updates as you clean up groups, giving you a clear picture of the space you’re reclaiming. For libraries with lots of burst shots or repeated takes, the savings can be significant.
Duplicates vs. Stowaways
Section titled “Duplicates vs. Stowaways”These two features work together but handle different problems. Stowaways catches media that probably shouldn’t be in your library at all - blurry shots, screenshots, scanned receipts. Duplicates, on the other hand, finds good photos that just happen to exist in multiple nearly-identical copies. Both features help you keep your library lean, but from different angles.
